The Theatre Museum is Britain's only performing arts museum in a country renowned for its theatre. It serves as a museum, library, archive and education resource. Established in 1987 in its current building the old Covent Garden Flower Market, it is the National Museum of Performing Arts and is a branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum.



The Covent Garden branch will be permanently closing to the public on 7th January 2007, although education work on the premises will continue until August. Follow the link below to read a statement from the museum about the future of its collections.

General Information

Cultural collections description

Material relating to black and asian theatre appears throughout the core collection – from playbills for black 19th Century actor Ira Aldridge to material on the Black Theatre Forum seasons at the Arts Theatre in the 1980s. Material is filed according to theatre, date and production title.

There are also special collections relating to a single topic, person or business. Examples include the archives of the Temba Theatre Company, the Black Mime Theatre archive and the Roehampton South Asian dance display collection.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
