Bruce Castle Museum

Lordship Lane, London, N17 8NU, England

Bruce Castle is a Grade I listed 16th Century manor house in 20 acres of parkland. William Compton - a member of Henry VIII’s court - built the oldest surviving parts of the building.

Since then the building has been modified several times by new owners including the Coleraine family. One of the wives of the 2nd Lord Coleraine is said to haunt the building. Sir Rowland Hill's family ran a progressive school for boys at Bruce Castle during the Victorian period. Sir Rowland reformed the British postal system and became famous for introducing the Penny Post. Bruce Castle opened as a Museum in 1906 and now houses the Borough of Haringey's local history collections and archives.

Cultural collections description

Bruce Castle Museum (Haringey Culture, Libraries and Learning) has historical collections that reflect the different communities in the London borough of Haringey.

We work with residents, groups and other partners to collect, interpret and care for Haringey's unique and multicultural heritage. Our collections cover archaeology, objects, documents & official records, photographs, paintings and oral histories relevant to Haringey's past and present communities.

Bruce Castle Museum is always seeking to represent more communities in Haringey. Collections currently include material for the following groups: Irish, Caribbean, African, Greek Cypriot, and Jewish. Some of our collections for these groups can be seen on the Moving Here website: www.movinghere.org.uk.

‘Haringey Connections’ – based on material from our collections – is an education resource pack available for teachers and community groups. It covers the Black presence, the Jewish Community and the Irish in Haringey.

For access to our collections, please contact us to discuss your research requirements and to make an appointment.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
