Hammersmith & Fulham Archives and Local History Centre

The Lilla Huset, 191 Talgarth Road, London, W6 8BJ, England

The work of the Archives covers the history of the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. We are partcularly concerned with its administrative history but our collection illustrates other aspects too. We have material about ordinary people and celebrities, everyday life and special occasions.

We are constantly searching out new material, material we then look after (repairing if necessary) and make available to the public. We also organise exhibitions, publications and events which advertise our collections.

We have many visitors. Some are tracing their family histories - occasionally coming from the other side of the world to hunt for ancestors in West London. Others are interested in the history of their homes. They want to know when the house was built and who lived there. Some are writing local history books or are engaged in academic research. The Archives and Local History Centre is a reference service, and material cannot be lent.

Services:

Photographic service; reproduction fees are charged when appropriate. List of charges available on request.

Photocopying facilities, staff-operated. Some original or fragile material is not suitable for photocopying.

Microfilm reader/printer.

Publications on local history subjects, reproduction maps, postcards and greetings cards are on sale; list available on request.

Talks to outside groups by arrangement (a fee is charged).

Cultural collections description

Hammersmith Archive and Local History Centre includes a small holding on the spectacular British-Japanese exhibition at White City in 1910. It also holds records for synagogues across the borough. It has local authority records some stretching back 100 years, which paint a general picture of life in the borough during that period.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
