The Anne Frank Trust UK

The Anne Frank Trust UK, Star House, 104-108 Grafton Road, London, NW5 4BA, England

The Anne Frank Trust UK is an educational charity established in 1991 that draws on the power of Anne Frank’s diary to teach people, especially the young, about mutual respect and appreciating each other’s differences in order to create a better society for everyone. The Trust promotes positive attitudes towards differences, particularly in ethnicity, religion and culture, and helps empower people to reject all forms of bigotry, prejudice and intolerance in their daily lives.

This is achieved through its major travelling exhibition that tours the UK. The brand new cutting edge, interactive exhibition Anne Frank + You was launched in June 2005 to coincide with the anniversary of Anne Frank’s birth on 12 June 1929. Its predecessor Anne Frank: A History for Today was the UK’s most visited touring exhibition having been seen free of charge by over 2.4 million people in the UK. The Anne Frank Trust has already affected the community for the better by informing, inspiring and involving more than three million people in primary schools, secondary schools, universities, colleges, youth organisations, prisons, young offenders’ institutions, workplaces and communities.

The exhibition is particularly highly valued by teachers and youth workers as a means of teaching citizenship, history and English, and the Trust provides guided tours for school and youth groups. In prisons and young offenders’ institutions, the Trust has the very exciting opportunity of working with prisoners and prison staff on their attitudes towards diversity, and educating and developing the self esteem and literacy skills of prisoners, who are trained to be guides of the Exhibition.

The brand new exhibition Anne Frank + You brings the messages of Anne Frank firmly into 21st century Britain to address the attitudes and behaviours of today’s young people, and challenge them in a thought provoking, interactive and dramatic way. The messages of Anne’s diary are presented through themes such as conflict versus peace, responsibility versus indifference, inclusiveness versus discrimination and personal and multiple identities, and will be a journey of self discovery for young people. Anne Frank + You is already exciting local authorities all over the country and bodies such as the Football Association, Prison Service and Metropolitan Police are developing plans to use it as a force for good.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
