The Hackney Archives Department looks after the archives of the London Borough of Hackney - the administrative records of the borough Council and its predecessors back to 1700, together with the records of organisations and individuals with links to the area of the modern London borough.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 9.30am - 1.00pm, 2.00pm - 5.00pm It is essential that you make an appointment before visiting. Please send and email or telephone during office hours. This will enable us to confirm that we have records relevant to your search and to book table space and a microfilm reader where necessary.

Closed

Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday The Archives are closed for the last two weeks of February for the annual stocktaking.

Cultural collections description

The material in Hackney Archives reflects the multiculturalism of the Borough. Hackney Archives have done searches through their material, to give an overview of the main holdings relating to Black, Asian and Jewish Londoners in their collections. Its records stretch back to 1700, however most of the material relating to cultural diversity is 20th or 21st century.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
