Southwark Local Studies Library

Southwark Local Studies Library, 211 Borough High Street, London, SE1 1JA, England

Because of Southwark's range of historical experience, its story is one that can only be told through the surviving historical documents. We have gathered these documents, and other historical sources, at Southwark Local Studies Library. The library has material that can help you find out the history of the area, your family or your house, or provide help with school or college projects. It also contains information on changes in Southwark today. We are happy to help anybody with an interest in the Southwark area.

The collections have extensive finding aids and the staff will always give advice on the best way to make use of the library. You do not need to make an appointment to visit, nor to be a member of a Southwark, or any other, library. We do advise you to book a microfilm reader if you will need to use one and to make an appointment for group or class visits. The Library holds a wide variety of source material.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
