Marx Memorial Library

Marx Memorial Library, 37a Clerkenwell Green, EC1R 0DU, London, England

The Marx Memorial Library is the place for books, pamphlets and periodicals on all aspects of Marxism, the science of Socialism and history of working-class movements. The library also contains the room that Lenin worked in when he was in exile in Britain, and a 1930s mural of the oppressed worker rising from his chains.

The Library is open to members of the public who would like to look around between 1 - 2pm Monday - Thursday.

Cultural collections description

The Marx Memorial Library is the place for books, pamphlets and periodicals on all aspects of Marxism, the science of Socialism and history of working-class movements. It is open to non-members Monday - Thursday between 1 - 2pm.

As well as housing a library it contains a room where Lenin worked when he was in London, now decorated with busts of the revolutionary, as well as original furniture. There is also a recently restored mural showing the working classes casting off their chains surrounded by Marx, Lenin and William Morris amongst others.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
