A poster protesting against the persecution of Jews in Russia.
|
The Jewish Museum holds material from across the Pale of Russia including Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and other countries.
On display there is a wooden Passover tray which is probably Russian and a poster for a mass meeting to protest against the persecution of Jews in Russia. The poster is dated 1st November 1899 and calls for a gathering in Mile End.
The Museum also holds reproduction images of the migration of presumed Russian Jews. The pictures first show a family fleeing amidst scenes of riot and looting, and the second shows them on the open road in a cart. Both of these images appear in the Jewish Museum's touring exhibition Closing the Door? Immigrants to Britain 1905-2005.

The Jewish Museum explores the history of Jewish immigration and settlement in London. Step back in time to view reconstructions of tailoring and cabinet – making workshops from Jewish East End. The permanent displays, 'From Eastern Europe to the East End' and 'The Tailor, the Baker, the Cabinet Maker' include objects brought by families from Eastern Europe, tailoring tools and a painted banner from the London Jewish Bakers Union.
Holocaust education forms a major part of the museum's work, with exhibitions and educational programmes relating to the Holocaust and the experience of refugees from Nazism. The upper gallery is focused on a moving display about a London-born Holocaust survivor, Leon Greenman. Leon shares his moving story every Sunday at the Museum with visitors.
There are constantly changing temporary exhibitions, together with talks and lectures.
