Gunnersbury Park Museum
The museum began proactively collecting from the early 1990s, when putting on various exhibitions that related to the South Asian community. At this time, the Heritage Lottery Fund enabled the museum to acquire 90 black and white phtographs of South Asian life in Southall, taken by Dennis Morris.
These early collections have now been expanded by a specific South Asian Archive, also supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This consists of 70 recorded interviews with South Asian residents of Ealing and Hounslow, together with photographs, documents, clothing and other material.
the recorded interviews describe the journeys made by south Asians to establish themsleves in the West London community. They include memories of World War II, Partition, emigration from Kenya, race relations in Southall, bussing, the founding of the Indian Workers'Association and the establishment of religious centres, work and entertainment in the area.
The material was on show in the "Meri Zindagi" exhibition during 2005 and 2006, but will not all be on display permanently. To listen to the recordings or view any of the interview summaries, documents, photographs etc, please contact the museum to make an appointment.
