Jewish Synagogue Ark

Housed in an elegant Victorian building in the lively area of Camden Town, the Museum features a History Gallery tracing Jewish immigration and settlement in Britain from the Norman Conquest until recent times, and a Ceremonial Art Gallery illustrating Jewish religious life with objects of rarity and beauty.

Highlights include loving cups presented to the Lord Mayors of London by the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, Italian cradle charms and wedding rings, embroidered textiles and Hanukah lamps from around the world. Among the treasures is an extraordinary Synagogue Ark from 16th century Venice, discovered by chance in Chillingham Castle in Northumbria where it was in use as a steward’s wardrobe!

There are constantly changing temporary exhibitions, together with talks and lectures; as well as audio-visual programmes illustrating the cycle of Jewish festivals and customs.
