Hackney Museum

Hackney Museum collects many objects that relate to the history of Hackney's diverse communities - e.g a set of Vietnamese painted fingernails. They also collect objects that relate to communites lives in their countries of origins, such as a Nigerian catapult.

There is a large display on Weinberg’s Printing Press in the "Place to do Business" part of Hackney Museum.

Objects include a Jewish printing press (large display; Samples of printed work in Yiddish; Image of Jews arriving in Hackney

Nearby text panels discuss how Jews from Russia settled in Shoreditch. In particular there's material on Barnett Weinberg who co-founded Yiddish paper Der Tzeit in Hackney in 1912. He also produced wide range of printed material from Bar Mitzvah cards to membership cards for Jewish Bankers Union. Business declined as the Jewish community gradually moved out of Hackney into the suburbs and the business finally closed in 1987.

World In The East End At Museum In Docklands

This image of 19th century lascars is just one of the pictures held by the Museum In Docklands, recording the history of the Port of London as it received people and goods from all over the world. The museum building is itself part of that history - being a renovated warehouse that one stored goods brought into the city.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
