Fan Museum

The Fan Museum is the only museum in the world devoted entirely to every aspect of fans and fan making. The Fan Museum is home to a collection of more than 3,500 predominantly antique fans dating from the 11th century to the present day. The collection is predominantly 18th and 19th century European, but also has fans from all over the world.

Although the collection is particularly strong in 18th- and 19th-century European fans, it also has a collection of some 200 Japanese fans of different types, styles and periods from Edo through to Taisho. The earliest fans in the collections date from around 1700 and were painted in the style of the Kano school; the collection also has a kanban (shop sign) in the shape of a fan.

The museum also has a a "secret" garden in the Japanese manner, with a fan shaped parterre, pond, stream and oriental architectural features - described by visitors as "an oasis of tranquility".

World In The East End At Museum In Docklands

This image of 19th century lascars is just one of the pictures held by the Museum In Docklands, recording the history of the Port of London as it received people and goods from all over the world. The museum building is itself part of that history - being a renovated warehouse that one stored goods brought into the city.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
