The National Archives

The National Archives hold all public records for England and Wales. A growing amount of information is being added to their website about holdings relating to migrant communities and the UK's former colonial holdings. The descriptions below don't begin to summarise what they have - but rather point to some newer online resources resulting from recent projects.

The National Archives have recently added 125,000 new object descriptions relating to the Caribbean to their website. The added documents are to be found through their search engine, under the Colonial Office listings. If you are interested in Jamaican documents type in CO137, or Bermudian documents type in CO37 or Grenada documents CO101.

There's also an online exhibition of some of the documents, telling the story of the Caribbean from the Transatlantic Slave Trade to the 20th century life of the islands.

World In The East End At Museum In Docklands

This image of 19th century lascars is just one of the pictures held by the Museum In Docklands, recording the history of the Port of London as it received people and goods from all over the world. The museum building is itself part of that history - being a renovated warehouse that one stored goods brought into the city.

The Museum Of London's new microsite allows you to search for the story of the many cultures of London in their collections.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
