Tower Hamlets Local History and Archives Library

Tower Hamlets local history library and archives covers the area of the present-day London Borough of Tower Hamlets; the original East End of London which, until 1965, comprised of the Boroughs of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney.



If you are interested in a building in the borough, tracing your ancestors who lived here, doing a school or college project on some aspect of the borough or are just feeling nostalgic, the archive may well be able to help you. They hold material on the many cultural communities who live in the borough.

Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives has a significant collection of material relating to the Bangladeshi community in Tower Hamlets. This chiefly consists of published books and reports about the community and published by local Bangladeshi organisations. Files of newspaper cuttings from the local and national press are maintained from the 1960s to the present day. Files of Bengali language newspapers are also retained such as Jagaran, Notun Din and Surma from the 1980s. The Archives Collection includes the research papers of Caroline Adams, author of Across seven seas and thirteen rivers: life stories of pioneer Sylhetti settlers in Britain. These include taped interviews.

World In The East End At Museum In Docklands

This image of 19th century lascars is just one of the pictures held by the Museum In Docklands, recording the history of the Port of London as it received people and goods from all over the world. The museum building is itself part of that history - being a renovated warehouse that one stored goods brought into the city.

This image shows Sir Mancherjee Bhownaggree, MP for Bethnal Green 1895 - 1906. A supporter of British rule in India, he was nicknamed 'bow-the-knee' by opponents. However he also lobbied parliament on the rights of Indian subjects.
