Finding Romanistan

08/05/2006

During March and April 2006, a festival Gypsy, Traveller and Romany culture took place in venues around London.

Primarily a film festival, it also included two art exhibitions: Traveltopia - a series of photographs by Melanie Wagner which showed in a gallery space at the National Theatre and work by four Traveller artists which appeared at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, Greenwich and later at the Curzon Cinema, Soho.

Melanie Wagner's photographs consist of 76 images taken over a period of a year, with the collaboration of the Gypsy community at Thistlebrook Caravan Site in Abbey Wood, Greenwich. You can see a number of her images on this page - to see high res versions of the complete photobook, go to her website here. The pictures are available for further exhibition.

Below, you can also download essays that first appeared in the programme for the Finding Romanistan festival - touching on the history of Gypsy and Traveller culture, and the present difficulties of Gypsy populations now that seasonal work is more rare, and the Criminal Justice Act makes it illegal to have a nomadic lifestyle.
